A very nice and straight Adams & Westlake Company lantern from the Great Northern Railway with no dents. It is embossed on the top lid "G.N.Ry, The Adams & Westlake Co., Adlake Reliable, New York, Chicago, Phila." with the last patent date being "April 1, 1913". The top lid has some very minor surface roughness by the button. Solid metal with lots of tin. It comes with a Corning clear cast 5 3/8" tall globe embossed in the rounded edge rectangular panel "GNRy", and embossed "Safety First" on the other side with the Corning logo "Cnx" and "T" above that. The globe has two small inside bottom rim flakes and one small outside top rim flake (see pictures). Very minor and will not be seen in the frame. The lantern has the correct 1909 Adlake burner and font in very good condition with no rust or pin holes. It stands 10 1/8" tall without the bail. The Great Northern's route was the northernmost transcontinental railroad route in the U.S. On a system 8,316 miles in length, its trains carry freight, passengers, mail, and express in the area between the Great Lakes and the Pacific Ocean. The railway operated in Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, South Dakota, Iowa, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and California, and the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and British Columbia. It started in 1889 and ran until 1970. This is a lantern that served the Great Northwest region and is one you could happily add to an ever-growing Railroadiana collection.
